Why Mercury Marine Precision Oils Matter
Marine engines work under extreme stress: long hours at high RPMs, saltwater exposure, and seasonal inactivity. Mercury Marine Precision Oils & Lubricants are engineered to withstand these challenges—offering superior wear protection, corrosion resistance, and reliable performance across every component.
Mercury 2-Stroke Engine Oils
- Premium Plus 2-Stroke Oil: For high-horsepower and direct-injection engines; reduces carbon buildup and exceeds TC-W3 standards.
- OptiMax/DFI Oil: Synthetic-blend for OptiMax and DFI engines; offers top-end protection and reduced piston scuffing.
- Premium 2-Cycle Oil: Ideal for low- to mid-horsepower 2-strokes; reduces corrosion and is safe for premix and oil-injected systems.
Mercury 4-Stroke Engine Oils
- FC-W 25W-40: Exceeds all marine 4-stroke requirements; approved for all outboards and sterndrives.
- 25W-40 Synthetic Blend: Designed for supercharged Verado engines; maintains viscosity under high heat and RPM.
- 10W-30: Suitable for all Mercury 4-stroke outboards; provides excellent lubricity and corrosion protection.
- Verado Racing Oil: Built for high-output and racing applications; retains performance under severe engine load and temperature swings.
Gear Lubricants for Mercury Outboards
- Premium SAE 80W-90 Gear Lube: Ideal for outboards under 75 HP; protects against wear and pitting—even in the presence of water.
- High-Performance SAE 90 Gear Lube: Designed for higher-horsepower and sterndrive units; features synthetic EP additives to protect under extreme loads.
Diesel Engine Protection
15W-40 Diesel Engine Oil: Developed for marine diesel engines, including MerCruiser D-Tronic. Offers excellent wear tolerance, shear stability, and varnish/sludge control in stressed conditions.

Mercury Oil Maintenance Tips
- Change oil after the first 20 hours (break-in), then every 100 hours or annually.
- Replace oil filter during each oil change.
- Always use FC-W certified marine oils—never automotive oil.
How to Check Your Oil Level
- Ensure the engine is vertical and off.
- Remove cowling and pull the dipstick.
- Wipe, reinsert, then remove again to read level.
- Oil should be between “Min” and “Max.”
- Top off if low; don’t overfill.
Steps to Change Oil in a 4-Stroke Mercury Outboard
- Warm the engine for 5 minutes.
- Drain oil via plug or use extraction pump.
- Replace oil filter with a Mercury-approved filter.
- Refill with Mercury 10W-30 or 25W-40.
- Check oil level and inspect for leaks.
